Forgetting your computer password isn\u2019t fun. Thankfully, if you use a Microsoft account to sign into Windows 10, you can reset your password through Microsoft\u2019s website and it\u2019s relatively painless.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s a different story with a local account. If you forget that, it\u2019s a doable but tedious process to reset the password for a local account.<\/p>\n

The latest April 2018 Update for Windows 10 adds a new feature that makes recovery a lot easier: security questions. Here\u2019s how to set them up.<\/p>\n

How to Add Security Questions to Windows 10<\/h2>\n

  1. Open Settings<\/strong> and navigate to Accounts > Sign-in options<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. Scroll down to the Password<\/strong> header. Under the Change<\/strong> button, you\u2019ll see an Update your security questions<\/strong> link. Click this. (If you don\u2019t see it, you\u2019re using a Microsoft account to sign in.)<\/li>\n
  3. Confirm your account password, then you\u2019ll see three boxes where you can select a question and provide an answer.<\/li>\n
  4. Choose your questions and answers wisely. You shouldn\u2019t provide obvious answers to security questions.<\/li>\n
  5. Once you\u2019ve added an answer for all three, click Finish<\/strong> and enter an administrator password if needed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Your security questions are ready to go once you\u2019ve done this. To reset your password with them, look for a Reset password<\/strong> link that appears under the password entry box on the login screen. You\u2019ll see it after you type an incorrect password.<\/p>\n

    Enter the correct answers for your three questions, and you\u2019ll be able to reset your account password. If you use a Microsoft account, you can reset your password at the login screen using Microsoft\u2019s utility instead.<\/p>\n

    We recommend that anyone using a local account adds these questions and notes their answers in a safe location. It\u2019s a lot easier to reset your password with this than it is with workarounds, and it only takes a moment to set up.<\/p>\n
