You type in the name of the site you\u2019re interested in or click a browser bookmark, and you see it within a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">But what about when it goes wrong? Sometimes, you\u2019ll see various <a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/website-security-certificate-care\/\">errors alerting you to problems with visiting that website<\/a>. While some of these are out of your control, you can troubleshoot others to find out what\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Let\u2019s quickly review some of the most common website errors. Note that errors starting with <strong>4<\/strong> (<a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/error-451-can-make-difference\/\">like error 451<\/a>) are client-side errors (issues with your computer), while those starting with <strong>5<\/strong> are server-side (problems with the website).<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">1. Error 404<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">404 is a common error. It signifies that <strong>the page you were looking for doesn\u2019t exist<\/strong>. This often occurs when you click a broken link, or if a website moves a page without redirecting it properly. But it can also happen if you mistype a URL.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">When you see a 404, check to make sure that you haven\u2019t entered the wrong address. Then try a Google search to find the right page, as it may have moved.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">2. Error 401<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A 401 error means that <strong>you need authentication to access the page, but don\u2019t have it<\/strong>. This usually occurs when you need to log into a website to access something but haven\u2019t done so yet.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you see this, try visiting the main page of the site and logging in again.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">3. Error 403<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A 403 error signifies that you\u2019ve made a valid request, but <strong>the server won\u2019t complete it because you\u2019re not allowed to access it<\/strong>. This is different than a 401.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A 401 tells you that you haven\u2019t logged in and so it can\u2019t authenticate you. But a 403 error says that it knows who you are, yet won\u2019t let you access the page. Typically, this means you\u2019ve stumbled across something private and need to access the website administrator for access.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">4. Error 504<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A 504 error signifies a <strong>gateway timeout, meaning that a server the website relies on isn\u2019t communicating with it quickly<\/strong>. When this happens, you won\u2019t be able to access the website until its administrators resolve this issue.
