Here\u2019s how to create and use an encrypted VeraCrypt volume in Windows to encrypt and <a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/ways-encrypt-daily-life\/\">protect your files<\/a> on any static or removable drive.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">What Is VeraCrypt?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/truecrypt-dead-4-disk-encryption-alternatives-windows\/\">A fork of the now defunct TrueCrypt<\/a>, VeraCrypt plugs all known security holes in TrueCrypt and improves upon TrueCrypt\u2019s weak encryption methods. VeraCrypt is also backwards compatible with TrueCrypt volumes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">VeraCrypt creates encrypted volumes for securely storing files. It also allows you to encrypt entire system drives or partitions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">We\u2019re looking at the Windows version here, but if you use macOS or Linux, there\u2019s a version of VeraCrypt for you too. To get started with this free tool, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veracrypt.fr\/en\/Downloads.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">veracrypt.fr<\/a> to download and install VeraCrypt. Be sure to accept the default settings during installation.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How to Create a VeraCrypt Volume (File Container)<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">To create a VeraCrypt Volume, open VeraCrypt and click <strong>Create Volume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/02-Click-Create-Volume.png\" alt=\"Click Create Volume\" width=\"565\" height=\"487\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On the <strong>VeraCrypt Volume Creation Wizard<\/strong>, select the type of volume you want to create. We\u2019re going to create an encrypted volume to store private files, so we accept the default option, <strong>Create an encrypted file container<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">You can also encrypt a non-system drive or partition, or encrypt the system partition, or entire system drive. To learn about these options, click the <strong>More information about system encryption<\/strong> link.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Click <strong>Next <\/strong>to proceed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/03-Select-where-to-encrypt.png\" alt=\"Create an encrypted file container\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The default <strong>Volume Type<\/strong> is a <strong>Standard VeraCrypt volume<\/strong>, which we are going to use for our example.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you\u2019re concerned that you might be forced by someone to reveal your password, you can also choose to create a <strong>Hidden VeraCrypt volume<\/strong>. Learn more about hidden volumes by clicking the <strong>More information about hidden volumes<\/strong> link.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/04-Select-Volume-Type.png\" alt=\"Select the Volume Type\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On the <strong>Volume Location<\/strong> screen, click <strong>Select File<\/strong>. Then, use the <strong>Specify Path and File Name<\/strong> dialog box to enter a name and choose a location for the VeraCrypt volume file.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">When you installed VeraCrypt, one of the default settings was to associate .hc files with VeraCrypt so you can double-click on a volume file to load it in VeraCrypt. To take advantage of this feature, be sure to add \u201c.hc\u201d to the end of your file name.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you want the <strong>Volume Location<\/strong> dropdown list to contain a history of VeraCrypt volumes you attempted to mount, uncheck the <strong>Never save history<\/strong> box. This allows you to select a volume from the list instead of using the <strong>Select File<\/strong> button. But this also provides easy access to your volumes and shows their locations to others who might get access to your computer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Once again, click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/05-Volume-Location-screen.png\" alt=\"Select the Volume Location and volume file name\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On the <strong>Encryption Options<\/strong> screen, choose an <strong>Encryption Algorithm<\/strong> and <strong>Hash Algorithm<\/strong>. The default algorithms for both are secure options, if you\u2019re not sure what to use.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/06-Encryption-Options-screen.png\" alt=\"Select Encryption Options\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Enter the size you want for the VeraCrypt volume in the edit box and select whether that size is in <strong>KB<\/strong>, <strong>MB<\/strong>, <strong>GB<\/strong>, or <strong>TB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Move onto the next screen with <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/07-Volume-Size-screen.png\" alt=\"Specify Volume Size\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Choose a <a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/create-strong-password-forget\/\">strong password<\/a> for your volume and enter it in the <strong>Password<\/strong> box, and again in the <strong>Confirm<\/strong> box.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Keyfiles add extra protection to your volume. For our example, we\u2019re not going to use keyfiles, but you can read more about them in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veracrypt.fr\/en\/Keyfiles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VeraCrypt\u2019s help<\/a> if you decide to use them.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you enter 20 characters or less for your password, you\u2019ll see a warning dialog telling you short passwords are easy to crack using brute force. Click <strong>No<\/strong> to return to the <strong>Volume Password<\/strong> screen and enter a longer, more secure password.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The <strong>Next<\/strong> button is only available once you\u2019ve entered the same password in both boxes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/08-Volume-Password-screen.png\" alt=\"Enter a Volume Password\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On the <strong>Volume Format<\/strong> screen, select the type of <strong>Filesystem<\/strong> you want to use. If you\u2019re going to access the volume on macOS or Linux, in addition to Windows, you should select either <a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/exfat-better-different-fat32\/\">FAT or exFAT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Leave <strong>Cluster<\/strong> as <strong>Default<\/strong> and <strong>Dynamic<\/strong> unchecked.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Move your mouse randomly over the <strong>Volume Format<\/strong> screen until the progress bar under <strong>Randomness Collected From Mouse Movements<\/strong> at least turns green. But the more you move the mouse, the stronger the encryption on the volume.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Then, click <strong>Format<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If the <a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/user-account-control-windows-10\/\">User Account Control<\/a> dialog box displays, click <strong>Yes<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/09-Volume-Format-screen.png\" alt=\"Select the Volume Format\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">VeraCrypt creates the volume file in the location you specified. This may take a while, depending on the size of your volume.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Click <strong>OK<\/strong> on the dialog box that displays when the VeraCrypt volume has been successfully created.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On the <strong>VeraCrypt Volume Creation Wizard<\/strong> dialog box, click <strong>Next<\/strong> if you want to create another volume. Or click <strong>Exit<\/strong> to close the wizard.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/10-Close-VeraCrypt-Volume-Creation-Wizard.png\" alt=\"Close the VeraCrypt Volume Creation Wizard\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How to Mount a VeraCrypt Volume<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Now that we\u2019ve created our VeraCrypt volume, we need to mount it to use it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On the main VeraCrypt window, select an unused drive letter you want to use for your volume. Check File Explorer to see which drive letters are currently being used, and avoid using them.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Then, click <strong>Select File<\/strong>. Use the <strong>Select a VeraCrypt Volume<\/strong> dialog box to navigate to and select a VeraCrypt volume file.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you accepted the default setting during installation that associated .hc files with VeraCrypt, you can also use File Explorer to load the VeraCrypt volume. Go to where you saved the VeraCrypt volume file and double-click the file.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/11-Click-Select-File-on-VeraCrypt-dialog.png\" alt=\"Click Select File to mount a volume\" width=\"565\" height=\"487\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The path to the VeraCrypt volume file displays in the dropdown list box.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Click <strong>Mount<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/12-Click-Mount.png\" alt=\"Click Mount\" width=\"565\" height=\"487\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Enter your <strong>Password<\/strong>. If you remember the <strong>Hash Algorithm<\/strong> you selected when you created the volume, select it from the <strong>PKCS-5 PRF<\/strong> dropdown list. If not, don\u2019t worry. You can use the default of <strong>Autodetection<\/strong>. It just might take a bit longer for the volume to decrypt and mount.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you used one or more keyfiles when you set up your volume, make sure you check the <strong>Use keyfiles<\/strong> box. Then, click <strong>Keyfiles<\/strong> and select the same file(s) you used when creating the volume.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A progress dialog box displays while the VeraCrypt volume is decrypted. Depending on how big your VeraCrypt volume is, this may take a while.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/13-Enter-password.png\" alt=\"Enter password to mount volume\" width=\"497\" height=\"194\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you entered a wrong password or forgot to select your keyfiles (if you used them when creating the volume), you\u2019ll see the following error dialog box. Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to go back to the <strong>Enter Password<\/strong> dialog box and enter the correct password and select the correct keyfiles, if you used them.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/14-Operation-failed.png\" alt=\"Mount operation failed\" width=\"373\" height=\"206\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Once the volume is successfully mounted, you\u2019ll see it next to the drive letter you selected, as a virtual disk assigned that drive letter.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">To access the volume, double-click on the drive letter in VeraCrypt.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/15-Volume-mounted-in-VeraCrypt.png\" alt=\"Volume mounted in VeraCrypt\" width=\"565\" height=\"487\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">You can also browse to the mounted volume in File Explorer the way you normally browse to any other type of drive. For example, we mounted our VeraCrypt volume using the drive letter <strong>Z:<\/strong> and it shows up with that drive letter in File Explorer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">VeraCrypt never saves any decrypted data to disk\u2014only in memory. Data is encrypted in the volume even when mounted. As you work with your files, they are decrypted and encrypted on the fly.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/static.makeuseof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/16-VeraCrypt-volume-in-File-Explorer.png\" alt=\"VeraCrypt volume in File Explorer\" width=\"644\" height=\"490\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How to Dismount a VeraCrypt Volume<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">When you\u2019re done working with the files in your VeraCrypt volume, you can close, or dismount, the volume.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Select the volume you want to dismount in the list of drive letters. Then, click <strong>Dismount<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">VeraCrypt removes the volume from the drive letter list. When a volume is dismounted, you can move the .hc file anywhere you want. You can <a href=\"\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/ultimate-windows-10-data-backup-guide\/\">back it up<\/a> to an external drive.
