Today, most malware doesn\u2019t come from traditional viruses but from potentially unwanted programs<\/strong>, which are third-party programs foisted on you during free downloads. They\u2019re often shady utilities like PC cleaners or search hijackers.<\/p>\n

If you aren\u2019t careful, you\u2019ll end up downloading an unrelated junk program while installing a legitimate free tool. While Windows Defender has been a solid antivirus without nags<\/a>, it now has a hidden feature that will block this kind of junk. Here\u2019s how to use it.<\/p>\n

How to Block Third-Party Junk Offers<\/h2>\n

  1. Open a PowerShell window by typing PowerShell<\/strong> into the Start Menu. Right-click the entry and choose Run as administrator<\/strong>, then confirm the prompt.<\/li>\n
  2. Enter the following command:\n
    Set-MpPreference -PUAProtection 1<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    That\u2019s all you have to do to enable automatic junk protection with Windows Defender. You can run this command again with a 0<\/strong> replacing the 1<\/strong> to turn it off anytime.<\/p>\n
    Now, you\u2019ll have an extra layer of protection from installing unwanted programs. Unlike Unchecky, which detects these checkboxes and automatically unchecks them for you, Windows Defender will step in and quarantine this junk if you accidentally install it.<\/p>\n
    Windows Defender classifies it as a \u201cpotentially unwanted software.\u201d You can view the history of what it\u2019s blocked by visiting Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection<\/strong>. Click Threat history<\/strong> and you\u2019ll see a list under Quarantined threats<\/strong>. Use the See full history<\/strong> link if there are too many entries to list.<\/p>\n

    This won\u2019t block every piece of crapware, so you should still be diligent about avoiding those checkboxes and be careful where you download from<\/a>.
